With the continued evolution of software and introduction of more advanced features such as artificial intelligence, the role of Chief Technology Officer has become even more integral. As the one responsible for overseeing an organization’s technological edge, a CTO must ensure that their vision propels the company towards a more competitive position in the market. Not only do CTOs need a keen awareness of the latest developments, they must anticipate where technology is headed and plan well for the future. 

A prime example of a great CTO is Prith Banerjee, the Chief Technology Officer at Ansys, where he has streamlined the company’s long-term technology strategy into a set of key pillars, showing that sometimes simplicity is key. Vimeo’s Chief Technology Officer Naren Venkataraman believes that accountability and craft are the attributes needed for a high performance team, demonstrated by how he and his team built and scaled the iconic Vimeo video player that’s become synonymous with quality. As the Chief Technology Officer of Collibra, Madalina Tanasie utilizes over 15 years of leadership expertise in software engineering to head Collibra’s engineering, architecture, production engineering, security, excellence enablement, and quality assurance divisions.

1. Mike Anderson
Company: Tealium
Title: Chief Technology Officer & Founder

Mike Anderson founded Tealium in 2008 and has served as the chief architect behind the company’s market leading tag management and unified marketing platforms. He previously worked at WebSideStory (Adobe Systems), where he served as a senior engineer on the core architecture team.

As the builder and leader of the company’s professional services team, he oversaw the analytics tag implementations for Disney, Best Buy, Target, Cisco, Citi, FedEx, and more. Anderson studied electrical engineering at the University of California, San Diego, and computer science at California State University San Marcos.

2. Narendra Venkataraman
Company: Vimeo
Title: Chief Technology Officer

With more than 12 years at Vimeo, Venkataraman has extensive experience with video technology, heading the company’s R&D efforts to help Vimeo play a leading role in next-generation open-source codecs, including development of advanced video codecs and compression standards like AV1 to (e.g., Alliance for Open Media).  

Venkataraman led the team that built and scaled the iconic Vimeo video player which has over 15 billion monthly plays and is synonymous for quality. Finally, he has demonstrated an ability to scale technology in a way that is good for the bottom line. Under his leadership, Vimeo has both increased their video hosting gross margins while improving latency, uptime, and SLAs. He and his leadership team believe that accountability and craft are key principles to build a high performance team.

3. Madalina Tanasie
Company: Collibra
Title: Chief Technology Officer 

Madalina Tanasie is Chief Technology Officer of Collibra, where she leads engineering, architecture, production engineering, security, excellence enablement and quality assurance.

She brings over 15 years of leadership expertise in software engineering, cloud-native distributed systems, and process management to the data intelligence company. Previously, Tanasie was the Vice President of Operations & Excellence at Collibra, where she led organizational transformation for product operations and engineering with a focus on engineering practices, scale and operational excellence.  

Prior to joining Collibra, she served as the Vice President of Engineering for Unified Platform at Medidata Solutions, a SaaS provider for clinical research in life sciences, where she held several prior engineering leadership positions. Before Tanasie, she worked in software engineering roles at the NYC Department of Education and TotalSoft. Tanasie received her master’s and Bachelor of Science in computer science from Politehnica University of Bucharest.

4. Brian Fox
Company: Sonatype
Title: Co-Founder and Chief Technology Officer

Brian Fox is Co-Founder and Chief Technology Officer of Sonatype, the pioneer of software supply chain management. He is a governing board member for the Open Source Security Foundation (OpenSSF), a member of the Apache Software Foundation, and former chair of the Apache Maven project. As a direct contributor to the Maven ecosystem, including the maven-dependency-plugin and maven-enforcer-plugin, he has over 20 years of experience advancing and leading the development of software for organizations ranging from startups to large enterprises.

Through his roles at Sonatype and OpenSFF, he has worked tirelessly with the cybersecurity community and regulatory organizations to further the understanding of and drive solutions for security issues in open source. Fox is a frequent speaker at national and regional events, including Java User Groups and other development-related conferences. Fox received a Bachelor of Science in computer science from Daniel Webster College.

5. Dan Nathan
Company: Phreesia
Title: Chief Technology Officer

Dan Nathan is the Chief Technology Officer of Phreesia, a technology company that gives healthcare organizations a suite of robust applications to manage the patient intake process. As CTO, Nathan directs Phreesia’s core and integration platforms. He is responsible for the company’s patient intake, data center operations, site reliability engineering, and analytics teams. Since Nathan joined Phreesia in 2007, the company began trading on the New York Stock Exchange and has grown exponentially to more than 1,500 employees. 

Today, Phreesia facilitates more than 100 million patient visits, and Nathan’s hands-on leadership has helped propel the company’s growth and success as the leading patient intake management platform. Before he was promoted to Chief Technology Officer in 2019, Nathan spent his first 12 years at Phreesia as an Architect and then as Vice President of Engineering. Prior to joining Phreesia, Nathan was a developer on Spotfire’s professional services team, working with users analyzing data in pharmaceutical research, oil and gas exploration, and semiconductor manufacturing. Nathan holds degrees in computer science and ceramic engineering from Alfred University.

6. Derek Slager
Company: Amperity
Title: Chief Technology Officer and Co-Founder

Derek Slager is the Chief Technology Officer and Co-Founder at Amperity, a Seattle-based company that helps the world’s largest consumer brands unify their data and drive best-in-class customer experiences.

Slager leads the company’s product, engineering, data science, technical operations and information security teams to provide a tool that gives enterprise customers a solution to better manage and use one of their most important assets: customer data. Amperity’s technical innovations, utilizing distributed computing and cutting-edge artificial intelligence/machine learning techniques, have resulted in eight issued patents and have fueled strong business growth since the company’s founding in 2016.

Prior to Amperity, Slager was part of the founding team at Appature, a leading SaaS marketing automation platform for healthcare companies. Throughout his career, he held engineering leadership positions at various business and consumer-facing startups. With over 25 years of experience managing diverse product strategies, he is a seasoned industry leader known for his ability to take advanced technology and transform it into scalable and marketable products.

7. Prith Banerjee
Company: Ansys
Title: Chief Technology Officer

Prith Banerjee is the Chief Technology Officer at Ansys, a leader in engineering simulation. In this role, he is responsible for setting the company’s long-term technology strategy. He has taken an intricate strategy and simplified that vision into a series of key pillars, including numerical methods, artificial intelligence/machine learning, high-performance computing, digital twins, and the cloud. As a result, Ansys’ strategy is more easily understood and embraced by its customers, partners, and employees.

Prior to joining Ansys, Banerjee held positions as the CTO of Schneider Electric, CTO of ABB, Managing Director of R&D at Accenture, and Director of HP Labs. Previously, he spent 20 years in academia as a professor, chairman, and dean at the University of Illinois and Northwestern University. He has founded two companies, AccelChip and Binachip. Banerjee currently serves on the board of directors of Turntide Technologies. In the past, he has served on the Board of Cray, CUBIC, Anita Borg Institute, and the Technical Advisory Boards of Ambit, Atrenta, Calypto, Cypress, Ingram Micro, and Virsec. 

He is a Fellow of the AAAS, ACM, and IEEE. He is the author of more than 350 papers and a book entitled “The Innovation Factory.” He received a Bachelor of Technology in electronics engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur and an M.S. and Ph.D. in electrical engineering from the University of Illinois, Urbana.

8. Richard Whitehead
Company: Moogsoft
Title: Chief Evangelist & Chief Technology Officer

As Chief Technology Officer and Chief Evangelist at Moogsoft, Richard Whitehead has a keen sense of what is required to build transformational solutions and he’s responsible for the successful introduction of products and technologies to the market. Founded in 2012, Moogsoft is the pioneer and leader in the AIOps space. 

The company provides intelligent monitoring solutions for smart IT operations, delivering the most advanced platform for software engineers, developers, and operators to instantly see everything, understand incidents, and remediate faster.

In multiple CTO and technology VP roles, Whitehead brought new technologies to market and was in charge of strategy, partnerships, and product research. Whitehead served on Splunk’s Technology Advisory Board through their Series A, providing product and market guidance. 

Whitehead is a DevOps Institute Ambassador and serves on the DevNetwork AI/ML Advisory Board. He serves as an ambassador for the DevOps Institute and recently co-chaired the ONUG Monitoring & Observability Working Group. He holds three patents and is considered dangerous with JavaScript. Whitehead received his Bachelor of Technology at HNC in electronics and his communication engineering degree from Farnborough College of Technology.

9. Patrick Chatain
Company: Contentsquare
Title: Chief Technology Officer

Since 2017, Patrick Chatain has served as the Chief Technology Officer for Contentsquare, which uses an AI-powered engine to analyze trillions of digital customer interactions and deliver intelligent recommendations to enterprises wanting to drive business growth. Founded in a small Parisian attic in 2012, the company has blossomed into a major software player with more than 1,500 employees working out of offices around the globe. To date, Contentsquare has raised $1.4 billion in funding.

Chatain is based in Paris, France. Throughout his career, he has acquired deep expertise in web, mobile, and data developments. Prior to joining Contentsquare, he worked as the Mobile and Fixed Services Engineering Manager at Bouygues Telecom; was a Founder and Managing Partner at Nenuphar Development; and worked as CTO at FullSIX Group. 

Chatain graduated from CentraleSupélec with a degree in engineering radio communication. He then went on to earn an executive certificate in business administration from EDHEC Business School. After that, he received his master’s degree in physics from Pierre and Marie Curie University.

10. Japjit Tulsi
Company: Matterport
Title: Chief Technology Officer 

Japjit Tulsi is the Chief Technology Officer of Matterport, overseeing Matterport’s engineering team and setting the technical vision for the company. With over 20 years of engineering experience, Japjit is a well-seasoned technology leader. Before Japjit was at Matterport, he was CTO at Carta, leading technological innovations for private company investors, founders, and employees to manage their equity and ownership. 

Prior to that, Japjit was Vice President of Engineering at eBay, leading engineering for new product technology and development, including eBay’s AI-powered shopping assistant, ShopBot. Earlier in his career, he helped build products like Google Analytics and YouTube long form at Google. He has also held executive positions at Microsoft and StumbleUpon.

11. Boris Shimanovsky
Company: ZipRecruiter
Title: Chief Technology Officer

Leading all engineering and technology functions for ZipRecruiter is Boris Shimanovsky, who has more than two decades of experience in the industry. Headquartered in Santa Monica, California, ZipRecruiter has helped more than 110 million job seekers find work. Shimanovsky joined the company in June 2020 and serves as Chief Technology Officer, where he is responsible for overseeing the highly skilled teams that manage scalable systems, sophisticated data, and AI/ML practices.

A lifelong lover of computer programming, Shimanovsky wrote his first videogame in the seventh grade. Later in college, he built a website that quickly became the 27th most trafficked on the Internet. Before joining ZipRecruiter, he was Senior Vice President of Engineering at Foursquare. 

Previous to that, he served as CTO for both Factual and Xap. He holds a Bachelor of Science in physiological science and a Master of Science in computer science, both from University of California, Los Angeles, where he published a paper on hiding data in DNA. In addition to his ZipRecruiter duties, Shimanovsky serves as director for A Foundation Building Strength, a nonprofit dedicated to finding treatments for Nemaline Myopathy.

12. Jenny Peng
Company: Aptean
Title: Chief Technology Officer

As Aptean’s Chief Technology Officer, Jenny Peng is responsible for leading Aptean’s product and technology organization, spanning product development, product management, information technology, security, and site reliability engineering. Peng also plays a key role in acquisition activities, including technical due diligence and integration guidance. Her past experience includes serving as Aptean’s CIO, leading Aptean’s enterprise-wide technology and cloud strategies as well as its product development function. 

With over 28 years of experience in enterprise software development and cloud computing, Peng brings strong strategic leadership to Aptean, aligning her team with the company’s vision, mission, and strategic goals. Prior to joining Aptean, she held executive roles as Vice President of Engineering at both CDC Software and Saratoga Systems.

Peng holds a Bachelor of Science in computer science from the University of Oregon. In addition to her outstanding leadership of Aptean’s vast tech team, Peng is noted for her ability to foster collaboration across the organization and drive change. Her colleagues and peers respect and value her commitment to excellence and passion for innovation.

13. Brian Dhatt
Company: BigCommerce
Title: Chief Technology Officer 

Brian Dhatt is the Chief Technology Officer for BigCommerce, where he leads a global engineering team across offices in Austin, San Francisco, Sydney, and Kyiv. BigCommerce, a large-scale ecommerce platform that helps provide software services to retailers, went public in August 2020 and currently has a market capital of $0.74 billion. Tens of thousands of B2C and B2B companies across 150 countries rely on BigCommerce to create engaging online stores. 

Dhatt is no stranger to IT security and operations in a variety of industries. During the past 20+ years, he’s led technology efforts for leading companies such as BestBuy, Restoration Hardware, and Estée Lauder. Most recently, he was CTO at Borderfree, where he was part of the company’s successful IPO as well as its acquisition by Pitney Bowes. 

Before that, he served as Vice President of Engineering and Product for Jetsetter and Gilt City – both under the Gilt Groupe umbrella – until Jetsetter’s acquisition by Tripadvisor in 2013. Dhatt is also an entrepreneur, having co-founded global media and technology company POPSUGAR. The executive holds a Bachelor of Science in computer science from Duke University.

14. Aris Zakinthinos
Company: TouchBistro
Title: Chief Technology Officer

Aris Zakinthinos has three decades’ worth of experience in the technology industry. He currently serves as the Chief Technology Officer at TouchBistro, an award-winning Toronto-based software company that makes running a restaurant easier. 

Since its 2010 launch, the company has evolved from a point-of-sale solution to become a comprehensive restaurant management system that streamlines and simplifies every aspect of running a restaurant on a single platform. TouchBistro is now deployed in more than one hundred countries – with a staggering combined gross sales volume that exceeds $14 billion.

A big part of TouchBistro’s recent success is due to Zakinthinos, who joined the company in March 2019. Previously, he spent nearly a decade at Achievers. There, he successfully built Achievers from the ground up into one of the Top Recognition providers in the world, which earned him a Top 25 CTO nod by Infoworld. In addition to the many companies he’s held leadership positions at, Zakinthinos’s passion for technology extends into the lecture hall. 

In the past, he taught Microprocessor Design at the University of Toronto, where he previously earned his doctorate in computer engineering. On top of that, he was a Naval Research Labs Post-Doctoral Fellow of Secure Systems at Cambridge University.

15. Scott Henderson
Company: Celigo
Title: Co-Founder and Chief Technology Officer

Scott Henderson is a Co-Founder and the Chief Technology Officer of Celigo, a leading integration-driven automation company that is based in San Mateo, California. Henderson and his fellow co-founder started Celigo with the mission to enable independent best-of-breed applications to work together as one. Celigo’s unique process-centric approach to automation enables IT and business users to discover, automate, and continuously optimize every business process.

For nearly 20 years, Henderson has worked in the enterprise software space, focusing primarily on emerging technologies and applying them to business software integration problems. Known for his skills in engineering and design, he currently oversees Celigo’s product engineering operations and product technology strategy. 

As CTO, he previously led the company through two major technology shifts: on-premise to SaaS; and then SaaS to iPaaS. Prior to his tenure at Celigo, he served as an engineer at both NetSuite and Nextance. Henderson holds a Bachelor of Science in electrical engineering and computer science from the University of California, Berkeley.

16. Adam Denenberg
Company: CommerceHub
Title: Chief Technology Officer

Adam Denenberg has dedicated his technological expertise to CommerceHub as its Chief Technology Officer since January 2022. After being launched in 1997, the company has grown into one of the world’s largest commerce networks, connecting over 18,000 retailers and brands globally to transact more than $50 billion in gross merchandise value (GMV). In his capacity as CTO, Denenberg leads the company’s engineering, security, and IT teams.

A seasoned technologist known for his customer-centric approach to innovation, Denenberg’s previous experience includes assembling the team that built and successfully launched a whole new platform for Huffington Post Live. He also served as CTO at iHeart Radio, Senior Vice President of Customer Solutions and VP of Engineering at Fastly, SVP of Engineering at Thomson Reuters, and additional engineering leadership roles at leading technology and media companies. 

Denenberg holds a Bachelor of Science in computer science and physics from the University at Albany, SUNY. In 2009, he received the Adobe Max award.

17. Peter Cousins
Company: WorkFusion
Title: Chief Technology Officer

Peter Cousins brings more than 25 years of experience in diverse business environments – from Fortune 50 enterprises to startups – to his role as Chief Technology Officer of WorkFusion. Launched in 2010, the company provides a SaaS cloud computing platform that uses crowdsourced workers to teach algorithms to automate a wide variety of knowledge work, particularly in the financial services, ecommerce, and retail industries. 

As CTO, Cousins leverages his abilities to envision a product, engage an early adopter community, develop the first code personally, build a successful team with the next layer of leaders, launch the product with analysts and the press, and then speak credibly to customers as a senior strategist. In fact, over the course of his lengthy career, he’s helped create products that have generated more than $1 billion in sales.

Before joining WorkFusion, Cousins served as CTO of IBM’s enterprise mobility management (EMM) division, where he was chair of the SaaS working group, notably driving strategy and mentoring across the company. 

Over the years, he’s also been the architect of numerous mission critical financial systems, including: Deutche Bank’s money transfer operations, JPChase’s fixed income trading system, and Prudential’s call center operations. Cousins graduated from the University of Virginia.

18. Fernanda Weiden
Company: VTEX
Title: Chief Technology Officer

For more than a year now, Brazilian-born Fernanda Weiden has been in charge of technology at VTEX, a London-based SaaS provider that is trusted by more than 2,400 customers, such as Colgate, Motorola, and Whirlpool. 

As Chief Technology Officer, Weiden is responsible for a wide range of areas: identifying new digital opportunities, making those products available for customers, nurturing in-house talent, and attracting outside talent as well. Even before she assumed her VTEX CTO role, she spent over a year as an advisor to the company.

With more than 20 years of industry experience, Weiden has held executive positions at big tech companies. For six years, she worked at Google and then moved to Facebook, where she became Director of Engineering and Production. After seven years at Facebook, she joined Brazilian company Unico. 

In September 2021, Weiden was promoted to the board of Unico, after previously being Vice President of Engineering. She studied business administration at Imperial College London and computer science at Universidade Anhembi Morumbi.

19. Jan Saan
Company: CM.com
Title: Chief Technology Officer

For more than 20 years, Jan Saan has been an integral part of the success at Netherlands-based mobile communication and payments service provider, CM.com. Started in 1999, CM.com was among the first to leverage text messaging as a serious marketing tool. After years of growth, the company now employs more than one thousand people, operating across 118 countries and handling over 1.7 billion customer service messages every quarter worldwide.

Saan has served as Chief Technology Officer for CM.com since September 2015. But he first came on board in 2002 as a product manager. Over the years, he’s held various positions of increasing responsibility at CM.com, including manager, IT infrastructure specialist, and Head of IT and Security. 

He’s also served as a consultant for Ordina Infrastructure Solutions and ICT professional for Centric IT Solutions. He received a degree in marketing management from Fontys University of Applied Sciences.

20. Hajo Eichler
Company: commercetools
Title: Chief Technology Officer

Hajo Eichler has served as the Chief Technology Officer for commercetools since July 2018. Leveraging his passion for quality, automation, and security in software development, he directs his company’s core technology solutions as it expands its cloud infrastructure for ecommerce businesses around the world. 

Based in Germany, commercetools operates additional offices located in the Netherlands, U.K., U.S., Switzerland, Australia, and Singapore. As of September 2021, the company is valued at $1.9 billion.

Eichler is a champion of the “tech is a people business” mindset. He joined commercetools in March 2012, starting at the company as a senior software engineer. He later served nearly five years as Head of Development before assuming his current CTO role. He previously held leadership positions at NumberFour AG, IVU Traffic Technologies, and ANSYS medini Technologies AG. He began his career as a researcher at Fraunhofer FOKUS. Eichler holds a master’s degree in computer science from Technische Universität Berlin.

21. Alo Sarv
Company: SOCi, Inc.
Title: Co-Founder and Chief Technology Officer

Alo Sarv is a Co-Founder and the Chief Technology Officer of SOCi, Inc., a marketing platform for multi-location brands. The company, which just closed a $120 million funding round, is trusted by businesses like Ford, Ace Hardware, and Jersey Mike’s to scale localized marketing efforts across all digital channels in a way that is brand directed, locally perfected, and data connected. 

Sarv has nearly two decades of experience in the tech world. In March 2012, he co-founded SOCi, first serving as lead programmer, where he developed the company’s AI-driven localized marketing platform, which has since won numerous awards. Then in 2015 he assumed his current CTO role, where he leads a global team of extraordinary engineers, product managers, and designers building next-generation solutions. 

A natural-born entrepreneur, he previously founded Fangate Media Co., Ltd., Rippol, Inc., and Hydranode Project. Sarv studied at Kehtna Economy and Technology School.

22. Manoj Chaudhary
Company: Jitterbit
Title: CTO and SVP of Engineering

Manoj Chaudhary is the Chief Technology Officer and Senior Vice President of Engineering at Jitterbit. Founded in 2003, Jitterbit provides an API integration platform for companies to rapidly connect SaaS, on-premises, and cloud applications. The Alameda, California-headquartered company, which instantly infuses AI into any business process, boasts an impressive clientele list that includes the likes of the U.S. Department of Defense, J. Crew Group, and iHeartMedia.

Chaudhary has 24+ years of experience in delivering digital transformation solutions in the technology industry. His work is centered on the managing, leading, and development of the engineering services and cloud operations team. He also has extensive experience in building SaaS applications. 

During his 9+ years at Cast Iron (later acquired by IBM), he notably guided the release of the company’s first cloud-based multi-tenant SaaS platform. Prior to joining Jitterbit, Chaudhary held CTO roles at both Tenfold and Loggly. He received a bachelor’s degree in engineering and electronics from Yashwantrao Chavan Maharashtra Open University. He also completed a postgraduate diploma in computers at C-DAC, Delhi.

23. Bassam Chaptini
Company: Unqork
Title: Chief Technology Officer 

As Unqork’s Chief Technology Officer, Bassam Chaptini concentrated on building his company’s sales fulfillment engine, its data ecosystem, and all of the machine learning solutions that help optimize sales and underwriting. Unqork was founded in 2017 with the mission to break through one of the largest barriers to growth for many companies: code. 

Today, Unqork is a leading codeless development platform with a customer roster that includes Goldman Sachs, Marsh, and the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. As CTO, Chaptini leads a wide range of areas, including: technology, product management, engineering, analytics, machine learning, and fulfillment functions.

Prior to joining the Unqork team, Chaptini was a Partner at consulting giant McKinsey & Company, where he co-led efforts to build the data analytics practice for the firm. While there, he also pioneered three data analytics solutions which have since been deployed in over 30 client situations. 

Chaptini received a doctorate from MIT in artificial intelligence, where his research focused on expanding machine learning techniques for more personalized online interactions.

24. Andrew Flegg
Company: Alfa
Title: Chief Technology Officer

Based in London, Andrew Flegg serves as the Chief Technology Officer of Alfa, provider of Alfa Systems, the software platform at the heart of some of the world’s largest and most innovative equipment and auto finance companies. 

Supporting both retail and corporate business, Alfa Systems offers an end-to-end solution for auto, equipment, wholesale, and dealer finance on a multijurisdictional basis – including leases/loans, originations, and servicing. 

Flegg, who graduated from the University of Warwick with a Bachelor of Science in computer science, has a 20+ year track record of success working with some of the biggest and most recognizable brands in the world. He began his career as a developer at the Ford Motor Company, where he was responsible for maintaining numerous technological services. He then spent more than four years at IBM Hursley Laboratories, working his way up from team leader to developer. 

But for the past 18 years he’s called Alfa his home, holding positions of increasing responsibility, including senior consultant, senior architect, Head of Solution Architecture, and Global Director of Platforms. Since becoming CTO in October 2019, he’s worked on a number of projects – providing development, support, management, and consultancy to the asset finance industry.

25. Christian Have
Company: Logpoint
Title: Chief Technology Officer

As Chief Technology Officer at Logpoint, Christian Have brings years of cybersecurity expertise to the role, having previously worked as the Head of Network Security for the Danish National Police. Founded in 2012, Logpoint is a computer security company based in Copenhagen, Denmark. 

As CTO, Have is currently responsible for Logpoint’s entire technology cycle. He owns the whole product process, from vision to marketing and everything in between. To this aim, he leads a multinational team of more than 150 cybersecurity specialists: architects, software developers, engineers, and analysts. 

In addition to his Logpoint duties, Have serves as a guest lecturer on cybersecurity at leading Danish universities. Previously, he also worked as a consultant at Devoteam Consulting and a security specialist at Bispebjerg Hospital. He holds a bachelor’s degree in IT from the IT University of Copenhagen. He later completed his education with two MIT Sloan Executive programs.
